Lowertown Map
The Lowertown historic neighborhood proper is roughly bordered by E. 7th St. on the north, the Mississippi River on the south, Jackson St. on the west, and the Lafayette Bridge to the east. However, the area north of E. 7th St. between Jackson St. and the Lafayette bridge to I-94 is considered by some to also be part of a 'Greater Lowertown'.
The reason for this disparity is that when the Lowertown historic area was submitted to the federal historic register the northern area was originally intended to be included. However, due to the request of building owners in this area who were concerned about additional historic building regulations, this northern portion was never included in the final submission and thus is not part of the National Register of Historic Places or the Lowertown Heritage Preservation District.
